From The Wattstax Festival & Film - Various Artists: Conceived as a
black Woodstock and offered at a buck a ticket as a virtual gift to the
people of Los Angeles by Memphis�s Stax Records, the 1972 Wattstax
festival continues to reverberate as one of the most earthshaking
concerts in the annals of black-American music. Some 112,000 people
assembled peacefully at the Los Angeles Coliseum for seven hours of
music by nearly every artist signed to Stax at the time. Label
luminaries such as Isaac Hayes, the Staple Singers, the Bar-Kays, Carla
Thomas and Rufus Thomas offered stunning performances, with lesser-known
figures such as Little Sonny, Lee Sain and the Temprees also nicely
represented. Also adding to the spiritual dimension of Wattstax was its
wealth of great gospel music, delivered by such artists as Deborah
Manning, Louise McCord, the Rance Allen Group, and recorded at a nearby
storefront church, the Emotions. This glorious 3 CD set includes more
than 3 hours of outstanding music, with almost a third of this
repertoire never previously available.
