Edward Elgar wrote this pageant-like piece for a ceremony in which the
British king was proclaimed emperor of India. The spoken narration and
elaborate personifications of Indian cities could easily degenerate
into low camp - which is why no one has recorded the whole work until
now. Andrew Davis and his forces, including the BBC Philharmonic,
miraculously manage to keep straight faces - and the requisite stiff
upper lips. That enables us to hear lots of very attractive music not
included in the suite that the composer extracted. For those whose
tolerance of Edwardian rhetoric is limited, Chandos includes at no
extra cost a second disc presenting the music without the spoken
sections. It also includes three of Elgar's big orchestral marches,
much darker in mood than the famous Pomp and Circumstance group.
They're in turn majestic, ruminative and bullying. The playing is
superlative throughout.

The text is absolute piffle, let's start with that - based on a
dispute between Delhi and Calcutta as to which should have precedence
("By sacred Ganges!" as Delhi exclaims to a rather withering Calcutta).
But the good news is that Anthony Payne and all involved have brought
to stirring life one of Elgar's most colourful scores. The great news
is that on disc two you can listen without the dialogue!
