Dexter Gordon & McCoy Tyner - Cool Summer Jazz (2002) DVD5

Taken
from television broadcasts called 'Harvest Jazz,' this DVD contains
sets by two separate bands, both shot at the Paul Masson Winery's
Harvest Festival, with no dates given. The spine reads: 'Cool Summer -
Dexter Gordon - McCoy Tyner.' I'm noting this because the leaders' names
are way at the bottom of the package even on the cover, not even
listing the sidemen on the disc, yet this DVD is worth the purchase as
the Tyner set is particularly hot. Fans need to know. On to the music
and visuals. These are excellently filmed, intelligently wasting no time
on gratuitous crowd shots. You see the audience there, but the visual
focus is at all times on the musicians, either in closeup or ensemble.

Once
or twice extremely short, vapid interviews are screened over the
beginning of a piece. Dex: 'Jazz is a living music.' Thanks. 'I like to
think of myself as musical.' Okay.
But before I can get really
annoyed, this is the entire extent of the 'backstage interview' material
noted on the boxback, not more than these lines, and so we're back to
the music.Gordon's set prominently features Kirk Lightsey on piano, and
he is a delight with his filigree romantic but not sweet.

He sets
the tone for the band and they start strutting when the sax comes in.
Dexter plays solidly, no more and no less. None of the band is
introduced and I don't recognize the drummer with his crocheted hat nor
the bassist. Dexter recites the lyrics to 'Skylark,' a fine idea, before
the band plays it, and they close with an uptempo number, 'Backstage at
the Village Vanguard.'

From the first note, Tyner's set is
smoking. Burrage is playing lots of high-hat; the visuals seem brassy as
well, and not just the cymbals. Everything seems to gleam, even the
fitting on Avery Sharpe's bass.

The sound is clearer in this
segment, as well. There are lots of excellent camera shots of both
Tyner's hands working, shot from underneath. This ensemble is enriched
by John Blake's violin. Blake, who too often is brought in to sweeten an
ensemble, here plays for real. When Hutchinson joins for the final
number, it swings for real.

I wish Hutch's own discs were as good
as his sideplaying. I cherish memories of his mindblowingly precise and
hard free-style playing under Andrew Hill at the old Knitting Factory
on Houston Street. Between Hutchinson's mallets and Burrage's free
kitwork, there is so much motion you feel as if on a treadmill.
